Retreat Mining Study

During the 13-month period from June 2004 to August 2005, Kentucky suffered four mining fatalities associated with retreat mining operations. These deaths prompted Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet (EPPC) Secretary LaJuana S. Wilcher to engage the professional engineering firm of Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. to study retreat mining in Kentucky. Their analysis, Retreat Mining Practices in Kentucky.pdf, is now available.  Adobe Acrobat is required and may be downloaded by clicking on the Adobe icon at left.
