Surface Mining Data

The Department for Natural Resources is dedicated to providing industry and the public with access to information in accordance with the Department's mission to enforce Kentucky's mining, reclamation and abandoned mine land laws for the protection of its citizens, environment and natural resources.

Data services accessible to the public via the Internet include:

  • the Surface Mining Information System relational database
  • downloadable forms, maps and publications
  • interactive maps pertaining to mining in Kentucky

Geographic Information Systems
The surface mining divisions of the Department for Natural Resources use a geographic information system (GIS) to capture, query, display and store spatial data.
Electronic Forms
Many forms required by the Division of Mine Permits and the Division of Mine Reclamation and Enforcement have been converted to electronic format and placed on the Internet for easy access.
Surface Mining Information System
The Kentucky Surface Mining Information System (SMIS) is an extensive computer database that is used for tracking all permitting and enforcement actions on coal mining activity in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
